On February 4th 2010, young people aged 11 – 18 from across Bath and North East Somerset voted in their thousands to elect their local Member of Youth Parliament. The election was organised by Democratic Action for B&NES Youth (DAFBY), now in their tenth year.
The result was announced by Deputy Leader of the Council Malcolm Hanney, at 6:45pm in the Guildhall, Bath. A total of 6,595 votes were cast, achieving a fantastic turnout of 41%. Stefan Di-Finizio, 14, of Wellsway School was elected as the Member of Youth Parliament with 1,253 votes. Billy Holmes, 16, of Norton Hill School, was elected to the Deputy position with 1,122 votes.
This year polling stations were available at 14 schools, in addition to local youth centres. The most improved turnout was at Writhlington School, where over 5 times as many students voted compared to last year. The poorest turnouts were at Beechen Cliff School and Chew Valley School. Across the constituency, there were 119 spoilt ballots, a drop of almost a quarter from last year
