New Member of Youth Parliament for B&NES Elected

The Bath and North East Somerset constituency elections for the UK Youth Parliament 2009 were the biggest ever, with over 44% of young people in the area taking part.

Fred Cotterill, 15, was elected as MYP with 1,282 votes. He is the first MYP to come from the Chew Valley area, and secured almost 20% of the total votes. Arran Shargall, 17 years old and currently attending Wellsway School, was elected Deputy with 717 votes.

7,522 votes were cast overall (a striking increase of over 3,000 from last year. This means 44% of young people in the area voted, achieving the best turnout ever. Now hosted in all 13 state schools in B&NES, polling stations were also set up in special schools for the first time, in addition to many local youth centres.
